I am Ms. Dezaree (or Ms. Dez), Nea's School Counselor. My office is located near the Nest and the Tree. 2019-2020 is my sixth school year at Nea, and I believe it will be my best yet. Here's a little information on me.

I've known my whole life that I wanted to work in a career helping youth because I lived through a difficult childhood with very few adults recognizing I could use some help. Growing up, we moved 12 times before I was 18 and went to 6 schools from San Diego, CA to Columbus, OH and back to San Diego. We spent every holiday and summer possible in the Bay Area where my dad's family had immigrated to from the Philippines. Though neither of my parents completed college, they pushed all four of their children to attend a university. From mental health issues to poverty to Navy life to the immigrant experience, my childhood had it all but my parents believed education would be the solution to a better life.

I applied to and was admitted to UC Santa Barbara for my undergraduate degree with no support from a school counselor or help with the college admission process. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with Minors in Education & Applied Psychology and Art History, I spent four years working with middle schoolers as a Site Supervisor for the YMCA PrimeTime program in San Diego. I wanted experience working with children before deciding to pursue a career as a School Counselor. To prepare to serve the Nea community, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of San Diego with a Master of Arts in Counseling with a specialization in School Counseling and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential.

Time at Nea:

I joined the Nea Community Learning Center as the School Counselor in October 2014 after a series of transitions in the school. When Ms. Annalisa had initially hired me, she told me to be prepared to put on my construction boots and get ready to work because of the scope of work I would be doing. As the only K-12 School Counselor during my first two years, I worked my hardest to address all of the needs of a very diverse caseload. In my third year, I transitioned to work primarily as the Upper Village (grades 6-12) School Counselor.

At Nea, I have a few different ways I help.

Upper Village School Counselor
Lower Village Aftercare Supervisor
504 Coordinator
MTSS Intervention Coordinator
Course Facilitator:
Sophomore Seminar Facilitator
Junior Seminar Facilitator
Senior Seminar Support
Club Advisor:
Red Cross Club Advisor
Art Club Advisor (art therapy exercises)
Group Counselor:
Boys Leadership Group
Girls Leadership Group
Emotional Support Group

Counseling approach:
I specialize in working with urban, diverse populations. I approach situations from a solution-based orientation both in counseling and in life. I help learners find perspectives and ways to address issues in their life in a way that works for them.

I believe in the mission of facilitating education for our learners through self-advocacy, diversity, and democracy. The experience I have in youth research and program management, as well as working directly with youth is a testament to the benefit I can have for the Nea community. I feel it is vital to bring together community, family, and school resources to implement proactive programs that facilitate positive youth development.

Outside of Nea:

I have a blessed life outside of work with my boyfriend, Eric, and our puppo, Kobe. I believe that my mental and physical health benefits greatly from being active. I enjoy bike rides and long walks around Bay Farm with Kobe and working out at Bladium. I also love reading, playing my Switch, spending time with my family in the Bay and visiting most of my immediate family in the greater San Diego area.

Please connect with me and let me know how I can support you!
