Lead Facilitator (Lower Village): Jana Chabre
Jana Chabre became Nea's Lower Village Lead Facilitator in July 2017. She holds a BA in Art and Spanish from St. Mary’s College. She obtained her teaching credential at UC Irvine, and her Master’s Degree in Education from San Francisco State.
Jana has been with Nea since 2011, and has greatly enjoyed her time teaching here. Jana has taught Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades at Nea, with a total of 16 years of classroom teaching experience.
During her time at Nea, Jana has also worked on several school-wide initiatives, including leading curriculum development for Kindergarten through Second Grade, coordinating Nea’s successful full-term WASC accreditation application and approval process, and initiating a reading intervention program for learners needing additional help.
Jana looks forward to applying the many things she has learned in and out of the classroom to her new job as an administrator and aims to foster continuity, community and unity in the school.
Lead Facilitator (Upper Village): Katie Reyes
Katie Reyes became Nea's Upper Village Lead Facilitator in July 2019. She holds a BA in English Literature from UC Berkeley and earned her teaching credential at Mills College.
Katie has been with Nea since 2011, teaching Humanities/English and Women's Studies. Before coming to Nea, she taught English and Humanities at middle schools and high schools in Oakland, Hayward and Alameda.
Curriculum and Instruction Lead: Annahita Rad
Annahita Rad is Nea's Curriculum and Instruction Lead. She holds a BA in History from UCLA with a minor in Education and a Masters in Education from UC Davis. She is also certificated in Business Administration through UC Berkeley, and as a Conflict Mediator through the Restoring Civility Conflict Resolution Program (Los Angeles) where she mentored middle and high school students to become peer mediators. Annahita is currently working to obtain her administrative credential.
Annahita's many years as a classroom and master teacher have made her passionate about the student educational experience and dedicated to supporting Nea's unique mission of child-centered learning. Her dedication to a learner-first approach extends outside of the classroom and into her participation on the Leadership Team and Diversity Committee where she advocates for learners and families and helps create user-friendly school policies.
As an EL Learner herself, (English is her third language, after Persian and French), Annahita understands that a diverse educational community requires a variety of experiences to make learning accessible and meaningful. As a teacher who incorporated project-based learning into her own practice, she is thrilled to be part of a school built around this model.
Prior to becoming an educator, Annahita worked in Silicon Valley, but decided to follower her passion for educating youth Annahita has served Alameda youth for the bulk of her career and resides in Alameda with her husband and son.

Special Education Director: Monique Arbuckle
Monique Arbuckle became the Director of Special Education for CLC Schools in January 2019. She brings over 23 years of experience in the field of education and demonstrates a passion for working with children and families. Monique is a school psychologist by trade, and was previously a Director of Special Education for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).
Monique was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA and comes from a family of educators. She completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at San Diego State University, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Organizational Leadership. During her 18 years at LAUSD, she worked closely with parents, learners, and school teams to ensure academic and behavioral success for all. Monique was attracted to CLCS for its small community and learner-focused mindset.
School Manager: Becky Freeman
Becky Freeman joined the team in May 2015 but has been an active member of Nea's community since 2011. She grew up in England and earned her LLB in Business Law before completing her Masters in Criminal Justice. A passionate educator, Becky spent the next four years researching youth victimization for her PhD and teaching criminology to undergraduates. She became deeply involved with the local community, working with youth homelessness, and those caught in a life of juvenile crime. It was during this time that she realized that she wanted to work in the field of education and support young people at risk.
Becky moved to the Bay Area with her husband back in 2001. They have two children who both attend Nea. In 2015 she received the salute to education honor from Alameda Education Foundation in recognition of her dedication to Nea. She currently serves on the PTSA Executive Board, the Personnel, Program Evaluation, and Curriculum Committees, and is the weekly newsletter editor. Becky loves working at a school she is deeply invested in.
Office Manager: Mary McKee
Mary started as Nea's original Office Manager in 2009. She continued in what she feels is her most rewarding job for six years until she had to take medical leave. Mary is so excited to be back to a community where she feels so welcome. She grew up in the Bay Area and has two daughters who graduated from Nea's sister school, ACLC. When Mary is not working, she loves to travel, read, walk with her dog and spend time with her husband, Michael.
