Dear CLCS Community -
It is with open hearts that we write this letter. The collective anxiety we are all feeling after the school violence in Florida weighs heavy in our community. The violence is disconcerting and troubling for all of us. With that in mind, it is important that we know the many things we do at our CLC schools to ensure that our learners, staff and sites are safe.
Classroom doors are locked during the academic day. We have registration procedures for visitors. We have Campus Supervisors who check the exterior and interior of the campus. We practice with drills for many different emergency scenarios and train our staff for these situations. We work closely with the Alameda Police Department and have a strong partnership regarding safety with Alameda Unified School District. Additionally, we work “behind the scenes” to create systems that we do not disclose, for security reasons.
Each day we continue our work to make sure all students feel they belong and are connected. That is one thing we believe we do exceptionally well at CLCS. All learners should feel (and we believe they do) there is at least one adult they can trust in the building. Our L2L program, along with several other programs, helps to connect learners with an adult. We have onsite school counselors and a Health Center to provide support. Our school office staff, psychologist and management team are resources that augment the work we do around learner support. The social emotional health of our learners is important.
Please talk with your learner about what is going on. Acknowledge the event and their fears; maybe share your own. Let them know they are safe. If he/she needs support, let us know. If you feel there is something we need to know, please reach out. While no one anticipates that such a tragedy will affect their community, we are comforted by the work we do to maintain CLCS as a safe learning community. Our collaboration and communication will ensure that CLCS remains a safe learning environment for us all.
Many families have reached out to us about things that they can do at home to support. Parents and guardians are often the first to detect their child’s emotional struggles. Attached you will find some tips for monitoring and promoting healthy emotional development at home. In addition, you will find an article from the National Association of School Psychologists that provides examples for parents on what to say to children at various ages and developmental stages.
