Special Education Services

At Nea, we believe in the potential of every learner. Because we are dedicated to each child's journey of self-discovery, we provide a nuanced range of educational options for children with differentiated learning needs.

These options may include differentiated learning approaches, instructional cues, environments, adjusted difficulty levels or schedules, specialized support services and more.

Whatever the need, we deliver our Specialized Academic Instruction (Resource Services), Psychological Services, Speech and Language, and Occupational Therapy in accordance with each learner's IEP.

At the same time, we understand every child's need to fit in and do what the other kids are doing. One of the stand-out features of our program is how we support learners in the classroom and during project time so they can participate to the maximum extent.

We believe:

  • All learners can be independent and life-long learners.
  • All learners can make a meaningful contribution to our democratic community.
  • All learners should be provided with the opportunity to learn in a meaningful way.
  • A collaborative approach to problem-solving and program implementation is the only way.
  • Accommodations and modifications should be re-evaluated and revised as learners grow and change.
  • Learners needs should be accommodated in the most beneficial and least disruptive way.

Specialized Academic Instruction

(Services provided by Educational Specialists and/or Paraprofessionals)

At all levels:

  • in-seminar support is our general approach
  • facilitators are well-versed in modification and accommodation needs and monitored closely
  • we are committed to a team approach with learners, parents, and staff.

Grades K - 2: We provide in-class as well as individual/small group support tailored to the individual needs of the learner.

Grades 3 - 5:  This group of learners is served within their seminars including English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  We ensure accommodations and support most learners within that setting, but some learners also receive individual/small group support as needed.

Upper Village (Middle/High School):  In this part of the program, we strive towards finding the delicate balance of providing support while fostering independence. Learners are encouraged to maximize their time in the Tree and are scheduled to work in the Resource Room ("Room 43") for support in a quiet work area as needed. Test-taking in "Room 43" is provided as needed

Psychological Services

Services include assessment, behavioral planning, consultation, and sessions with some learners.  Many, but not all, of these services are IEP driven.

Speech and Language/Occupational Therapy

These services include small group instruction for speech and language, as well as "push-in" support in the classrooms.  Occupational Therapy (OT) services are delivered in the form of direct service and/or consultation for those learners with OT needs identified in their IEP.  Screening and assessments for speech and OT are included in these services.

Evaluation for Special Education

If you have questions about Nea's special education program or feel an evaluation for special education services is appropriate for your child, please contact Monique Arbuckle, Special Education Director. Should the team determine that an evaluation is appropriate the process can take approximately two months.
