Lunch at ACLC
"It's nice to just be a kid and hang out with your friends at lunch."
Dear ACLC Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! We have spent this summer preparing for your return and look forward to providing delicious food done well. The Alameda Unified School District Food and Nutrition Services (FANS) Department meets stringent federal nutrition standards for school meals, while ensuring meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch!
School meals offer students a variety of protein choices and grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and milk, which all must meet strict limits on saturated fat, calories, sodium, and portion size.
Starting this year, school meals must adhere to increased nutrition standards from the Federal Government, such as:
- Age-appropriate calorie limits;
- Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce);
- A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes;
- Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free); and,
- More whole grains and less sodium.
We take pride in our program and it shows! We work to offer our students healthier and tastier choices. The majority of our meals are freshly-prepared from scratch at our Wood Middle School kitchen daily. New this year, we will provide a fresh fruit & vegetable salad bar, offering many locally-sourced products.
School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families. All families are encouraged to apply for the Free/Reduced-Price Meal program. Applications are available at your school office.
We have an amazing staff, who work hard to provide your children a nutritious breakfast and lunch. We are so excited about the meals we are cooking and hope you will encourage your child to eat with us. We look forward to your participation this school year.
